FAQ: What video resolution is supported by Creatable?

Video is measured in display resolution, represented by width of pixels multiplied by height of pixels. The highest resolution available online is High Definition (HD), which starts at 720 height, and typical ratios online support 1280 or 1024 x 720. The highest HD resolution is 1920 x 1080, full HD. The Creatable streaming service and player natively supports up to 1920 x 1080. Now, whether or not we will publish at such resolution all depends on the file that is uploaded to us. If the file is 1920 x 1080, then we will publish at such resolution. However, you must also consider bandwidth when entertaining the resolution at which video will be experienced online.

The higher the resolution, the more bandwidth needed to deliver the same without buffering. If the bandwidth available is limited, an HD stream will risk interruption in streaming. The solution for this is adaptive streaming technology, known standards for which are HLS and DASH.

The Creatable online video player natively supports adaptive streaming, both HLS and DASH, which means that it will break up the uploaded file into multiple resolutions. For example a 1920 x 1080 file may be broken up into 5 different resolutions under HD in order to auto-adjust to such resolutions if the bandwidth available cannot support full HD. This is very common with services such as Netflix or Hulu where you will see some pixelation for a few moments (while your internet connection is limited) and then a shift back to crystal HD resolution once the higher internet connection is regained.
